Children’s Dentistry

At Greystanes Dental, our dental team have years of experience with children & strive to make every visit as pleasant and fun as possible for them.

It’s easy to assume that your child won’t need to see a dentist until they have a full set of teeth,
but it’s important to remember that dentistry isn’t just about teeth.

It’s about the whole mouth, including lips and gums, because a child’s dental health
affects your child’s speech, jaw development, and overall health.

And, of course, if you have any concerns about your child’s dental health at any point
before either of these milestones, contact us to book an appointment.

We can organise appointments for your child with our dentists after school or on a weekend to ensure they don’t need to miss any school.

It’s recommended that children from 18 months old should start learning some positive dental habits, like brushing their teeth twice a day and flossing.

We’re all aware of the negative impact sugar has for our teeth.

However, it really comes down to the frequency of sugar as opposed to eating or drinking a lot at the one time. The best time for a child to eat sweet foods is at the end of their meal because you can then plan around their brushing cycle. It’s important to look after the health of milk (baby) teeth as they are essential not only for eating, but for speech development, facial appearance and saving space for adult teeth to grow into.

Regular Check Ups

While regular dental check-ups are not required for younger children, there are benefits to bring them with you upon your 6-month check ups. Not only will they have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with a dental appointment, they’ll be able to meet our children’s dentist and learn to not be fearful of visiting in future!

When your children become more independent and brush their teeth without supervision, you should organise regular hygiene appointments with our kids dentists. Teenage years are typically when orthodontic treatment takes place as most of the baby teeth will have been lost and replaced by adult teeth. Our dentists will be able to advise you on the best time to see an orthodontist or paediatric dentist, and our principal dentist Dr Lee is also an expert in teeth straightening.

Child Dental Benefits Scheme

We are a proud participant of the Child Dental Benefits Scheme through Medicare and will bulk bill all dental work accessible through the schedule. This will provide each eligible child (0 to 17 years of age) with up to $1,026 over 2 calendar years for basic dental services

During your child’s first dental appointment, our dentists will take a full medical history and look at health and development factors that may affect your child’s overall mouth health.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Children should go to the dentist when their first tooth becomes visible or they reach 12 months old, whichever comes first. And, of course, if you have any concerns about your child’s dental health at any point before either of these milestones, contact us to book an appointment.

  • Your child’s first visit to the dentist is important, and not just because it can identify any existing or future concerns about their dental health.

Your child’s first dental appointment can set the pattern for future visits and their attitude towards dental care for many years to come.

With that in mind, Greystanes Dental fosters a comfortable, fun, and stress-free environment for children of all ages, and offers a few do’s and don’ts:

    • Don’t bribe your child.

    • Don’t tell them that it will (or will not) hurt, or use a dental appointment as a punishment or a threat.

    • Do make sure you only say positive things about your own dental experiences because what your child hears can influence how they feel about the dentist.

    • Do try and take your child with you when you have a check-up so that they can see what happens.

    • Do try making your child’s dental appointments earlier in the day so they aren’t tired.

    • Do try to follow their appointment with fun activities, like a visit to the park or having a friend over to play.
